Meet Shan Havins, Founder and CEO
Hello there! I’m so glad you are here! My name is Shannon, but most people call me Shan. I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at 36 and have turned my journey with Parkinson’s into one of connecting with and supporting others at every opportunity. Initially, though, I didn’t have such a positive outlook on my future with PD. Being diagnosed with Parkinson’s at 36 was not part of my plan. Rather, it seemed to crush all my plans. I felt I had lost my sense of self and my future. Who was I outside of what I could do and achieve? If I didn’t actually have control? Who was I with Parkinson’s?
I began frantically researching. I read peer-reviewed research and information published by specialists and Parkinson’s organizations. I read books, blogs, and social media posts written by people with Parkinson’s and their care partners. I watched webinars, YouTube videos, and documentaries. I saw specialists, made lifestyle changes, and experimented with medications. Eventually as I learned more and processed my grief around what I’d expected my future to look like, I started to find balance in my body.
I landed in a place where I felt acceptance of my diagnosis and hope for my future. So, what next? What would I do with this new life of mine? Through the connections I made in my local support group, I found my purpose. I would devote my time to serving others in the Parkinson’s community. I would help make living with this diagnosis a little bit easier for as many people as possible. I would connect people with support and resources that are custom-curated for their unique needs.
This diagnosis has been life-altering. At this point in my journey I can see that it has also been life-giving. I am proud of who I am today and what we are bringing to all of you through TWT.
If you haven’t already, please watch the video I created in partnership with the Brian Grant Foundation and StoryCentre Canada to learn more about how TWT came to be at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdMWEWD7Few. Thank you for connecting with us! I look forward to what’s ahead!
